An Effective Jet Lag Remedy?
A number of products to overcome jet-lag have appeared on the market in
recent years but most seem to be of doubtful effectiveness, and often
they're more hassle than they're worth.
That situation could now be over, with the appearance on the market of a
New Zealand invented and manufactured remedy, No-Jet-Lag, has been proved
effective in countering jet lag problems in a clinical trial.
It was tried by the New Zealand All Blacks rugby and league teams on their
recent tours of Britain and both team doctors recommended that it be used
on future tours.
No-Jet-Lag comes in the form of pleasant tasting tablets that are taken in
flight to counter the disorienting and fatiguing effects of long-distance
travel, especially the circadian dysrhythmia associated with crossing time
zones. It is compatible with other medications, and meets Olympic
standards as being free from traces of banned drugs.
Members of the Kiwi league team took No-Jet-Lag when flying to Britain
recently, and coach Howie Tamati was quoted in the press as saying no
national side had ever arrived on the other side of the world in such good
shape. To the surprise of commentators, they went into training
immediately on arrival and had an unexpectedly clear-cut victory in their
first match. The team doctor, Wayne Morris reported that all members of
the team found No-Jet-Lag to be extremely beneficial and said: "I have no
hesitation at all in recommending it to anybody traveling overseas."
The All Blacks' doctor, John Mayhew, has also recommended to the Rugby
Union that No-Jet-Lag be used on future long-distance rugby tours,
following the experience of players who used it on the recent tour of
Britain.
No-Jet-Lag has been successfully clinically trial tested against a placebo
and is approved by regulatory authorities for sale in a number of overseas
markets where it is already available commercially including Singapore and
the Netherlands. It is listed by the US Food and Drug Administration for
over-the-counter sale.
In New Zealand, No-Jet-Lag is available at all Amcal Chemists outlets,
most other pharmacies and Flight Centres. It is also stocked at Auckland
International Airport, Wellington and Christchurch international airports.
No-Jet-Lag is available throughout the United States.
Who Gets Jet Lag?
Well almost everyone on a long haul flight. A major US study showed as
many as 94% of long haul travelers suffer from jet lag. A recent 1994
survey of New Zealand based long haul flight attendants showed a similar
result with 96% of respondents saying they suffered from jet lag despite
being accustomed to long haul travel.
Specifically 90% suffered from tiredness after arrival, 73% from
dehydration, 94% experienced lack of energy and motivation and 93%
reported broken sleep after arrival. Ear, nose, throat problems, colds or
flu were suffered by 70% and 53% suffered from disorientation. Swelling
limbs, which usually are a major problem for passengers, were only a
problem for 32% of flight attendants. The reason given was exercise,
moving up and down the aircraft serving passengers.
It hardly seems possible that so many problems could result from merely
traveling in an aircraft, but as the survey of flight attendants shows,
it affects even the professionals.
If the above problems are not enough a recent World Health Organization
report said that up 50% of world travelers will get diarrhea and factors
such as travel fatigue and jet lag may aggravate the problem by reducing a
travelers' resistance and making them more susceptible to this type of
infection or poisoning.
The clinical trial was conducted by the Pharmacy School of the University
of Otago in New Zealand measured the effectiveness of No-Jet-Lag on a
party of 20 skiers traveling from New Zealand to Germany and return. The
study: a double blind, placebo controlled, cross over trial showed that
those using No-Jet-Lag were 40% less tired (mean fatigue inertia = 9.47 vs
5.63 p 0.026) and had 18% more energy (mean vigour activity = 18.11 vs
21.16 p 0.072).
Its effectiveness has been further enhanced by the survey of flight
attendants. 75% of respondents said No-Jet-Lag was either good or very
good in countering the effects of jet lag.
